Friends of
Palumeu and Awarradam!
METS maintains a special relationship with the local communities. We develop
our activities in close consultation with the authorities in the villages in
our destination areas.
METS herewith adheres to the following starting-points:
• Tourism that promotes the development of the local communities according
to their own insight.
• The local authorities should approve of the establishment of the tourist
resorts. Wherever possible, METS assigns the full management of the resort
to local employees.
• The basic provisions such as education and health care are established in
close cooperation with the authorized institutions and supporting
organizations.
• Attention is given to the protection and preservation of the environment
through, among others, awareness programs.
Definite contributions of METS
• Part of the proceeds of each tour is donated to the village funds;
• We maintain a favorable tariff for air transportation of local people;
• Free transportation by airplane of sick persons and school teachers;
• The foundation of a public school at Palumeu by METS in 1995, further
developed with financial support from tourists and now acknowledged by the
government;
• Co-financing of the Medical Post at Palumeu. METS found “Skan Fonds” The
Netherlands willing to finance the renovation and furnishing of the post;
• Financing of a freezer running on solar energy for the village Palumeu via
Micro Projects (EU);
• In preparation at Palumeu: a hydro-electric project for the village. METS
is herewith working together with the Tukui Palumeu Foundation, the Anton de
Kom University in Paramaribo and
the UNDP;
• Revealing the unique lifestyle of the inhabitants of Palumeu and the Gran
Rio area and stimulation of the preservation and revaluation of traditional
customs and arts & crafts by presenting these to tourists; this provides an
extra source of income for the villagers.
How can you contribute?
Do you wish to contribute? If so, you can directly contact one of the
institutions or persons below. Your METS guide and the manager at the resort
will gladly assist you herein.
Current projects
• In the Gran Rio area, in the vicinity of Awarradam, the “Kayana”
Foundation is working at the improvement of the school, the establishment of
a learning workshop for older children and a sustainable agriculture
project. If you visit Kajana school during the walk through the village,
you will receive further information about these projects.
• At Kosindo, the “Wan duumi moo didia” Foundation makes efforts, among
others, to maintain their own culture and ancient-old traditions even in
these modern times.
• The objective of the Tukui Palumeu is: the further development of the
village Palumeu and surrounding area without disturbing the current balance
between human and nature.
• At Palumeu, young people learn the art of painting from Winston van der
Bok, a painter of Amerindian origin.
