Day program Kasikasima Jungle Tour – 7 nights

Day 1
You depart from local airport Zorg en Hoop to the airstrip near the Amerindian village Palumeu, approximately 75 minutes south of Paramaribo. You will soon recognize the METS eco-tourism starting points: our personnel are helpful Trio and Wajana Amerindians, the cool evenings make air conditioning and fans unnecessary, you will enjoy the comfort of a mosquito net. The evenings are spent in an atmospheric ambiance with lighting fueled by solar energy and the meals are prepared, primarily with local ingredients. After check-in in your lodge you depart to Palawa island for a picnic lunch. You can also enjoy swimming in the cool river water. In the afternoon you visit the Amerindian village Palumeu with the guide to learn more about the current lifestyle and handicraft of the oldest inhabitants of the Amazon rainforest. At night, the guide prepares you for the expedition. You receive tips on safety, comfort and the respectful use of this pristine part of the jungle.

Day 2
You will immediately feel the expedition- and team spirit when you see everyone lending a hand at loading the provisions for the trip in the boat. If you happen to forget something, this will not easily be found in the jungle where you will spend the days in a simple manner. Your exciting and adventurous trip is about to start. The trip on the Tapanahony

and the Palumeu river takes you to the first base camp for overnight stay, Kamakabari. The trip takes 3 to 7 hours depending on the water level. Upon arrival in the camp, the cook prepares a perfect lunch while the other participants of the group build a hammock camp together with the guide. He shows them how the hammocks and mosquito nets are tied. He has a few good tips for those who have never slept in a hammock. He also provides information about the sanitary facilities in the jungle. In the late afternoon, while the cook is busy preparing dinner, you have the opportunity to swim, relax in the rapids and enjoy a natural massage or maybe go fishing.

Day 3
After spending an exciting night in the midst of the jungle and enjoying breakfast in the morning, it is time to break off the camp again and reload the provisions in the boat for the trip onward to the second base camp Kasikasima, at the foot of the Sawaniboto Falls. The boatmen may ask you to lend a hand to pull the dug-out canoe over the rapids. An exciting experience! At the Trombaka sula the boat is unloaded and all provisions are carried over the hill by foot. Your help is welcome and at the same time a good preparation for the upcoming trip to Mount Kasikasima. Upstream, the boatman is waiting with a dug-out canoe to bring you to the base camp where you arrive late in the afternoon. After this exciting day, you will enjoy relaxing in the hammocks. After dinner, the guide provides information about the highlight of this expedition: the climb to one of the peaks of Mount Kasikasima.

Day 4
A sturdy jungle hike over several hills leads you to the foot of Mount Kasikasima. On the way, the guide provides information about the flora and fauna, the sounds and footprints of animals and the environment. At the foot of the mountain, before the start of your climb, you may, if you’re lucky, see the famous “cock-of-the-rock”, a rare orange colored bird. Once at the top you will be well rewarded with a magnificent view over the ‘roof’ of the jungle. Lunch is served on the plateau, amidst flora never seen anywhere else. Upon arrival back at the base camp, after the sturdy walk through the forest, it is time for a relaxing message in the seething waters of the river. The cook prepares a good meal and well-rested you have the opportunity at night to share your experience with the other participants, by a campfire.

Day 5
In the morning, departure for a sturdy jungle hike to the Kodebaku Falls. During this trip you have all opportunity to learn more about the flora and fauna of the tropical rainforest. At Kodebaku Falls you can enjoy a true water spectacle at high water level and at low water level you may take a walk in the vicinity. Upon return to the base camp, after lunch, you have time for your own activities such as fishing with the boatmen, peddle in a dug-out canoe or just relax and enjoy this part of the pristine Amazon rainforest. At night, the guide takes you on a boat trip by night on the river during which you may even see the red eyes of a crocodile in the beam of your flashlight.

Day 6
After taking the camp apart again together, you start the return trip to Palumeu. Since the trip is now downstream by boat, it is much easier and you have more time to look around to enjoy the surroundings or see if you can spot animals; maybe you will see howler monkeys in the tree tops or crocodiles lying on a beach along the river or maybe even a river otter. Lunch is served at the now well-known Kamakabari camp and when you arrive back at Palumeu jungle lodge, fulfilled and content, the refreshing drink that is served is more than welcome.

Day 7
A day to catch your breath, relax or spend in recreation with your newfound friends such as bow and arrow shooting, swimming, peddle in a dugout canoe, play volleyball or a game of soccer. After dinner, the expedition group says goodbye to the cook and boatmen.

Day 8

After breakfast, the guide will take you to the village for a guided tour and opportunity to purchase handmade souvenirs. After lunch you will depart by airplane to Paramaribo.
