Galibi Tour

Location
The Galibi area is situated along the Marowijne river at the estuary of the Atlantic Ocean.
Origin and general information
Galibi is the collective name for two Caraib Amerindian villages, namely Christiaankondre and Langamankondre. These indigenous villages were established after the slavery period and have since developed into a rather large community with a population of approximately 750 inhabitants.
Day program
Day 1
Departure by bus around 08.00 hrs from Paramaribo, on the East-West connecting road, to Albina. During the trip (2 ½ hours) the guide will provide information about the historical events that took place in district Marowijne. At Stolkertsijver, a stop will be made for a bread roll and drinks after which you will arrive, in the early afternoon, at Albina from where the journey will be continued by boat. Depending on the tide, Christiaankondre can be reached after approx. 1½ hours. After a delicious lunch, you have time free to relax. ‘The afternoon program includes a walk in the village at which you have the opportunity to purchase souvenirs. After dinner, a boat trip by night (1 hour) to Babusanti beach where the sea turtles come each year to lay their eggs. Overnight in the holiday lodge at Christiaankondre.
Day 2
After breakfast, the guide takes you for a walk on the beach and you have the opportunity to swim in the river. After this unique experience it is time to get ready for the trip back to Paramaribo. Lunch will be served at Albina before departure to Paramaribo.
Included in the tour
Transportation by bus and boot, accommodation, meals, drinks (non-alcoholic), Dutch/ English speaking tour guide. Special dietary requests will be considered.
Accommodation
All rooms offer beds with mosquito nets and shared use of sanitary facilities. Accommodation is based on 2 to 4 persons per room.
Departure: 08.00 hrs from Hotel Residence Inn or pick up from one of the large hotels in Paramaribo.
Return: Following day, at 17.00 hrs. Transfer to your hotel.
What to bring along: - bath towel & swimwear
- sufficient leisure clothing (including a couple of extra t-shirts). Even if it is not raining, you may get wet on the river during the trips by boat.
- flip-flops and water sandals
- suntan lotion & mosquito repellent
- a hat or cap
- a rain coat or poncho
- photo and/or video camera in a waterproof bag to protect your equipment against the splashing water during the boat trip on the river
- a small back-pack to carry for ex. a water bottle during the walks on the tour
- pocket money (Surinamese currency) for purchase of souvenirs (if available).
We advise you to follow the instructions of the guide during the
trip to the beach where the turtles come to lay their eggs.
